A Tradition of Mexican Flavor
The swirling sweetness of a warm and gooey cinnamon bun, especially when it’s made by Chef Veronica Amaya, cannot be beaten. Canela is her brainchild.
Born and raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. Amaya’s passion is for creating exciting new vegan recipes with fresh ingredients. Chef Amaya has been living and promoting a plant-based vegan lifestyle in her community of Calgary since 2013.
The word “Canela” is Spanish for cinnamon, which just so happens to be a key ingredient and the namesake of Chef Amaya’s small bakery in Calgary. She chose this name deliberately to represent her mission of bringing traditional Mexican flavor to all of her recipes and baked goods.
Locally Owned & Operated
Chef Amaya, an immigrant herself, started Canela in her daughter’s kitchen with an easy vegan cinnamon roll recipe. The market gradually became a go-to spot for the local community.
Canela’s customers tipped us off in 2021 that they had the best cinnamon rolls not only in Calgary but possibly in the world! We were bombarded with so many suggestions to visit this quaint little bakery in Calgary, that we eventually gave in and added Canela to the list along with three other bakeries.

A Vegan Bakery
On our two-day journey to discover the best cinnamon rolls in Calgary, we quickly discovered that not all cinnamon rolls are made equal. One bakery stood above the rest and it was vegan.

Canela is located in a modest house just off of Macleod Trail S.W., and it specializes in vegan baked goods…including cinnamon rolls. If you’re not a vegan, don’t let that deter you from sampling these delights; you’ll have a hard time convincing yourself these cinnamon rolls are not real. Because they most certainly are. Not only are they real, they are the best cinnamon rolls in Calgary.
Canele’s most popular vegan cinnamon rolls are still a top choice for bakery consumers, and for good reason. We’re purists at The World’s Best Cinnamon Rolls so we tried Canela’s Classic Cinnamon Roll with cream cheese frosting.
Although our team was there to review Canela’s classic cinnamon roll, others who are more adventurous may enjoy trying their seasonal cinnamon roll flavors.

Canela is Perfection
Canela is special. Chef Veronica Amaya’s brainchild was a recipe for success! Living a Vegan lifestyle, Amaya has demonstrated to her community in Calgary what’s possible.
Canela’s cinnamon roll was delicious; it tasted freshly baked and the cinnamon wasn’t overpowering. The cinnamon roll’s cream cheese frosting was just the right amount!
The staff at Canela were very friendly and helpful, and the bakery had great lighting that made it feel bright and welcoming.
Amaya’s humble roots, hard work, and dedication to her craft have earned her international success. Congratulations to Chef Veronica Amaya and her team at Canela on being named the Best Cinnamon Rolls in Calgary. Canela has also earned a nomination for the 2023 World’s Best Cinnamon Rolls. The current title of the World’s Best Cinnamon Roll is held by Kanela Breakfast Club in Chicago, Illinois.
